ABOUT WHEELING FOOD TOURS

Stroll the streets of Wheeling, West Virginia sampling local food and hear local history.  Wheeling is the largest city in the northern panhandle of West Virginia.  Interstate 70 passes through it and the Interstate 70 bypass known as “I-470” passes to the south.

The Ohio Valley (Wheeling) had many factories and for that reason, many people moved here during their immigration from Europe.  The Ohio Valley became a cultural melting pot of people and they brought their food recipes with them.   Throw in some new adventurous chefs and you have food tours that allow you to sample some of Wheeling’s great food and history.

We aim to create an enjoyable leisure activity for both locals and our out-of-town guests by connecting people with local food, culture, history and each other. We want to educate, entertain and inspire our guests by connecting them to our partner restaurants. We are also working towards bringing people back to the downtown Wheeling area.

We have various tours covering different areas of Wheeling from our largest Downtown/Centre Market Loop (about 1 mile and 3+ hours) to our shortest Centre Market tour (2 flat blocks and about 2 hours).  Prices vary per tour and will take place rain or shine.  There are restrooms and places to sit along the way.  Depending on the tour, tours will visit 5-7 local establishments.  There will be food sampling at each establishment and enough for a meal by the end of the tour.

Wheeling Food Tours reserves to right to cancel due to low enrollment.  Registration must be done ONLINE through this site or contacting the owner by phone.  Registration ends at 10:00 a.m. the day of the tour.

Meet Our Guides

David McLeod

Dave was born and raised in the Ohio Valley, across the river from Wheeling in Shadyside, Ohio. His mother would bring him to downtown Wheeling for shopping in the 60s and 70s.  This would always include lunch at either the Tea Room in Stone & Thomas, Elby’s Big Boy, the counter inside G.C. Murphy, or Louie’s Famous Hot Dogs.  Now days he loves to eat at a variety of local establishments. Dave's wife Becky is a very good cook but now that they have an empty nest, they probably eat out more than they should.

Favorite Food: any meat and especially a good burger

Becky McLeod

Becky was born and raised in St. Clairsville. She comes from a family of many great cooks. It was always a joy to attend a family reunion because the covered dish food was so good.  Although there was never a restaurant in her family, there are many great recipes.

A joke around her home was for her father to quit making excuses to go to Wheeling around lunch time because everyone in the family knew he was going to Coleman’s in the Center Market to get a fish sandwich.

Favorite Food: pasta and Coleman’s fish sandwich
